I was lucky enough to land my first travel writing gig back in January 2011, when I was hired to prepare the second edition of the Bradt Guide to Sierra Leone, the country’s only dedicated travel guidebook. That’s me on the right, living the dream.
In the years since, I’ve written travel features, news and analysis for The Washington Post, the BBC, TIME Magazine, Adventure Travel Magazine, Hemispheres Magazine, AFAR Magazine, and The New York Times, where I began to contribute on a regular basis in 2018. Several of my articles (including this one on Airbnb in Barcelona and this one about Pompeii) garnered awards from the Society of American Travel Writers and the North American Travel Journalists Association.
It was a great run, but I hung up my hat as a journalist in 2025. For nostalgia’s sake, here are a few links to some of my favorite stories from over the years.
My first feature in The Washington Post, about trekking in Nepal
This piece that I wrote for the BBC about the promise of tourism in the wake of conflict in Sierra Leone
When I got to profile (and fly with) a world champion paraglider for AFAR Magazine
My story for The New York Times on how heat waves are disrupting travel in Europe
My tourism-focused Q&A with the First Lady of Iceland for The New York Times
This piece for The New York Times about the future of sustainable aviation
